Hi everybody!
My name is Renee and for those of you who don't know me, I love hair!!!! I have been doing hair extensions for approximately 7 years, and I have learnt all the in's and out's to what makes extensions look stunning!
If you are interested in having extensions put in your hair, you may have lots of questions....So, I thought I would do my best to answer some of those questions, on this page.
How are the extensions attached?
The hair comes in "strands", each weighing approximately 0.5grams. At the top of the strand is a tiny aluminium bead. Inside this bead is a thin layer of silicone. A small amount of your natural hair is threaded through the bead, and then this is clamped closed extremely tight. This causes the bead to hold on to your hair as it grows naturally.
There are also other methods of attaching hair extensions. Another popular method is using whats called a "weft" of hair. This means the hair comes stiched in long lengths. The accurate amount is then cut so that it can be glued on to your natural hair, from one side of your head to the other. This method is similar to what the clip in kind look like, although these are glued in. The glue I use is the most gentle on your hair. It is latex based, and can be removed quite easily. This method is only suggested if you have enough length in your natural hair to cover and blend the extensions.
Will extensions damage my hair?
The micro link method will not harm your natural hair. When you have extensions attached I will always provide you with a fact sheet that explains how to care for your new look. If you let your natural hair grow to much before having the extensions adjusted, you may notice a small amount of matting (knots). Some people are happy to let the extensions go for longer than normal, but I always suggest having them adjusted every 5 weeks. If you care for your hair appropriately (treat the extensions as they are real) you will do no damage to your own. When applying glue on extensions the risk is little higher. I prefer not to use heated keratin glue, as I feel this is not to healthy on your real hair. The weft method requires glue, although it does not use heat and can be removed. I often explain it like this....when you wash your normal hair (with no extensions) you loose hair...With the glued in weft, you will loose less, BUT when you take the extensions out, it may pull minimal hair out with the extension. I myself use this method in my own hair and I would not do so if I felt it was to drastic :) If you are concerned about damaging your hair, I would recommend the micro links (beads).
How long will they last?
The human hair will need to be cared for by washing it with the correct shampoo and conditioner. The extensions require moisture to continue feeling soft. This means you need to wash your hair every 2 or 3 days. The hair itself will last for at leat 3 months. It comes down to personal preference on whether you would like to replace the extensions or continue using them. The adjustment (moving the beads up) will need to be done as you feel it needs it, generally every 4 or 5 weeks.
How much will it cost?
A full head of extensions is $350 and a half head is $200. A full head is two packets of hair, and is 200 strands! This is many many more than a salon will offer. A half head is 100 strands. You will then need to purchase the correct shampoo and conditioner, and I recommend speaking with your hairdresser to choose the right ones.
Can I colour the extensions?
YES! The hair can be coloured, curled, straightened and treated as though it is your own. I recommend only dying the hair darker, but I do have clients who have lightened them and still had great results.
Can I have them cut?
Once the extensions are attached you can have them trimmed or cut in a style how ever you like. If you have reasonably short hair, I suggest getting a style cut that will layer your own hair into the extensions. Any hair dresser will happily be able to cut and style your new hair!
Can I have more than one colour?
YES! I love doing hair extensions...and this means I get a kick out of seeing a great end result. Often this means I will need to use more than one colour, especially with blondes. I do not charge extra to use a variety of colours, where as salons will charge extreme dollars and often will refuse this. This is normally because they want to charge you to colour your real hair to blend in the extensions.
Why so cheap?
I have a great supplier and I order in bulk. I do not run out of a salon so I do not have over head fees, and I pass these savings on to my clients. I am looking to build up my cliental base. If I keep my prices low, clients will continue to use my services and tell their friends!
What colours are available?
I have a wide variety of colours and I generally keep them all in stock. I will happily organise a consultation free of charge and you can look at the sample colours and have a play with the hair. Again, a consultation is FREE!
